Here are some tips that will help you save both energy and money. Feel free to contact us if you have leaking taps or discover other “energy thieves” at home.
Refrigerator and Freezer
- Regularly defrost your refrigerator and freezer.
- Try to keep the freezer full. A half-full freezer uses more energy.
- With the correct temperature in the refrigerator and freezer, you save energy and your food lasts longer. The refrigerator should be about +5 degrees and the freezer -18 degrees.
- Thaw frozen goods in the refrigerator.
- Vacuum behind the refrigerator and freezer sometimes.
- Check the sealing strip on the door.
Stove and Oven
- Use a heating plate that matches the size of the pot.
- Use a lid to make it boil faster
- Use a kettle instead of heating on the stove
- Turn off the oven and burners before the food is done to use residual heat
- Do not open the oven door unnecessarily
- Pour coffee into a thermos instead of keeping it warm on the coffee maker
- Feel free to cook in the microwave
Dishes
- Use a dish tub instead of rinsing under running water.
- Feel free to use the dishwasher when doing the dishes.
- Make sure the dishwasher is fully loaded before running it.
- Get a water-saving nozzle for the tap.
Wash efficiently
- Fill up the washing machine. It uses almost as much energy to wash a single sweater as a full load.
- Wash lightly soiled laundry at 40 degrees instead of 60 degrees.
- Spin the laundry thoroughly to reduce drying time.
- Prefer using a drying cabinet over a tumble dryer. It uses almost as much energy to dry a pair of socks as it does to fill the entire drying cabinet.
In the Bathroom
- Bathe less and shower faster. A five-minute shower instead of fifteen minutes can reduce the annual hot water consumption by up to 500 kWh per person.
- Turn off the water while lathering and shampooing your hair.
- Also turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.
- Report dripping or leaking taps.
Reduce your electricity consumption
- Say goodbye to standby. Turn off your appliances with the power switch and avoid standby mode. Some devices use almost as much power when in standby and
not in use, as when they are turned on. - Always turn off the lights when you leave the room. Lighting accounts for a quarter of household energy use, so there’s both money and energy to be saved here.
- Switch to energy-saving bulbs or LED lighting
Take care of the heat
Don’t have large furniture or long curtains in front of your radiators, as it prevents heat from entering the room. If you feel drafts, check your sealing strips around windows and doors and contact us.
