Katrineholm Real Estate AB – KFAB – is a company wholly owned by the municipality of Katrineholm, tasked since 1955 with constructing and managing residential properties. In recent years, the company’s responsibilities have expanded to also include properties for other municipal operations such as schools, etc.

KFAB was established as early as 1912 to manage the properties of the Practical School. The company was formed by some of the city’s leading industrial leaders. At a general meeting on October 1, 1946, it was decided to sell the company to the city of Katrineholm. The activities up to 1955 consisted solely of managing the school properties in the Ekorren and Hjorten blocks, i.e., the Technical School’s buildings.

The idea that the city should build residential houses on its own initiative was held by the leaders as early as the 1940s. Politicians wanted to participate in shaping the construction of the future. To carry out this construction, a limited company was needed. Therefore, the possibility of transforming KFAB into a so-called public utility housing company was investigated. After extensive investigations, the city council decided on July 19, 1955, to adopt a new company charter and transform KFAB into the public utility housing company it is today.
KFAB’s activities as a builder and property manager began with constructing a property on plot number 2 in the Kastanjen block at Bryggaregatan in the North. Over the years, a large number of properties have been constructed or acquired –all with the goal of providing good housing and creating a stable municipal housing company.

The purpose of the company is and always has been to construct and manage residences of good standard and to offer competitive rents. Additionally, as a public utility housing company, KFAB has taken social responsibility in housing provision.
