Condensation in the Fridge

Does water flow onto the kitchen floor when you open the door to your fridge? The hole at the bottom of the fridge might be clogged, or the shelves might be incorrectly positioned. You can fix it yourself in a few minutes.

Every time you open the fridge, warm air from the apartment enters, which causes moisture to form. The moisture settles on the back wall of the fridge where the cooling plate is located. After a while, water droplets form that run down the wall, known as condensation water.

Clean the drainage hole

At the bottom of the fridge, there is a hole where the water should be able to drain out. The water then runs down into a small bowl located above the compressor. The heat generated when the compressor operates is enough for the water to evaporate, so in other words, the fridge takes care of the condensation water.

If dirt gets stuck in the small drainage hole, the water will find other paths. Check that there is no dirt in the small drainage hole every time you clean the fridge.

Another common mistake is that the shelves are not positioned correctly. The condensation water must have a clear path along the back wall. Therefore, the shelves should not be placed all the way in. Do not stack food items on top of each other against the wall where the cooling plate is located. Then the condensation water ends up on the shelf instead.
